How to Take Apart a Couch or Sectional

Break down your sofa or sectional for easier removal, moving, or disposal.

Quick Answer

A couch can be broken down into: removable cushions (separate immediately), sections of a sectional (connected by metal clips), and the frame itself (upholstery cut away, wood and metal separated). Full disassembly takes 30-90 minutes with a utility knife, reciprocating saw, pry bar, and bolt cutter. Or call Umuve — we handle this for you starting at $89.

Step-by-Step: How to Take Apart a Couch or Sectional

1

Remove cushions and pillows

Strip all loose cushions and pillows. Check under cushions for coins, remotes, and small items before proceeding. Cushions can often be compressed and bagged for separate trash disposal.

2

Disconnect sectional sections

Sectional sofas connect via metal clips or hooks on the underside. Tilt one section and look for the connecting hardware. Metal clasps typically slide up and off; metal clips may need a flathead screwdriver to release.

3

Remove the legs

Most couch legs screw off counterclockwise. Removing them reduces overall height by 4-8 inches and often allows the sofa to fit through doors. Some are held with bolts through the bottom frame — use a wrench.

4

Attempt the door test before further disassembly

With legs removed and cushions off, try the doorway again. Many sofas that appear too large fit through standard 32-inch or 34-inch doorways when tilted vertically or at a diagonal angle.

5

Remove the back (if detachable)

Some sofa designs have a detachable back cushion or back section. Check along the rear bottom for bolts or clips connecting the back frame to the seat frame. This alone can make a sofa fit through most doors.

6

Full disassembly: cut the upholstery

If the couch needs to be fully broken down: use a sharp utility knife to cut the fabric along all seams. Pull the upholstery off the frame. Remove any staples with pliers. This is dusty, dirty work.

7

Remove foam and padding

Foam sections compress significantly. Stuff foam into contractor bags. These can go in regular trash in small amounts or be dropped at foam recycling facilities.

8

Break down the frame

Couch frames are typically plywood, particle board, or solid wood with metal spring assemblies. Use a reciprocating saw or hand saw to cut sections. Metal spring assemblies can go to scrap metal yards.

Disposing of the Removed Item

After disassembly: bag foam for regular trash (small amounts), take metal frames to scrap yards, put wood sections out for curbside bulk pickup (scheduled), or call Umuve to haul the entire disassembled pile from $89. Umuve also handles the disassembly for you — often faster than DIY.
