How to Take Apart a Bed Frame

Disassemble your old bed frame safely — wood, metal, and upholstered styles covered.

Quick Answer

Most bed frames take 15-30 minutes to disassemble with basic tools. Metal frames: remove bolts at corner joints. Wood platform beds: unscrew the slats then the side rails from the headboard and footboard. Upholstered frames: no disassembly needed, just remove for pickup. Umuve removes bed frames for $89, or county curbside is free with scheduling.

Step-by-Step: How to Take Apart a Bed Frame

1

Remove the mattress and box spring first

Clear the entire sleeping surface — mattress, box spring, and any foam toppers. Set aside or schedule a separate pickup. Working on an empty frame is much easier and safer.

2

Remove slats (platform and wood frames)

Lift out any individual wooden slats from their notches or hooks. Bundle and tie them together. If they are screwed down, use a drill with a screw bit to remove them first.

3

Photograph the frame before disassembly

If there is any chance you might want to reassemble, take photos of the joint connections before breaking them down. This also helps if you are selling parts.

4

Locate and remove all bolts and screws

Metal frames typically use hex bolts at corner brackets — use an Allen wrench or socket. Wood frames may use cam-lock fasteners, screws, or bolts at rail-to-headboard joints. Check underneath the frame for any floor brackets.

5

Separate the rails from headboard and footboard

Once all hardware is removed, slide or lift the side rails out of their brackets. Most bed frame systems separate into: headboard, footboard, two side rails, and slats.

6

Break down upholstered frames

Upholstered platform beds typically do not need to be disassembled for removal — they can be taken whole. If needed for door clearance, check if the headboard detaches (usually 2-4 bolts at the back).

7

Bundle and tie components

Tie metal rails together and wooden slats into bundles for easier transport. This also prevents pieces from scratching walls and floors during removal.

Disposing of the Removed Item

Bed frame disposal options: (1) Metal frames go to scrap metal yards ($5-$15); (2) Wood frames can go curbside with scheduling; (3) Solid wood frames in good condition to Habitat ReStore or Craigslist; (4) Umuve picks up bed frames plus mattresses together for best value — starting at $89 for both.
